New York & Lake Erie Railroad
"Fall Foliage" Railfan Trip - August, 1981
By John Baker
At the photo stop at Lake Lynco, snow fell in such amounts that we titled it "The First Christmas Card Photo Run." Several people sang Christmas Carols and made snow balls. The weather was in marked contrast to the previous week to say the least. Our most persistant problem on all three trips was that we provided a real test of the pulling power of. NY&LE ALCO S2 #75. Our consist of WNYRHS coach #242, Three Lake Shore Railway Historical Society coaches, a flat car converted for railrans and our own #19602 caboose posed a problem on the hill. On the 9th and 10th trips, #75 stalled on "Gibson's Curve."
With real hard work from our crew we did make the grade on Saturday. However on Sunday the 10th, problems with brakes on #19602, made it necessary to double "The Hill." On Sunday the 10th we were determined to show that #75 could do it. It was slow and not without problems on Gibsons Curve but we did it all in one move.
With our marked success in these full excursions on the New York & Lake Erie Railroad. We will certainly be running them again next year for our members and the public's pleasure.
