New York & Lake Erie Railroad
"Fall Foliage" Railfan Trip - August, 1981
By John Baker
The WNYRHS took its first "Fall Foliage" Excursion over the New York & Lake Erie Railroad in August of 1981 from Gowanda to Salamanca and back. The weather was great as we rode behind the NY&LE's first diesel locomotive, an ALCO S2 #75.
Our railfans were thrilled as the train passed through the railroads' iconic "stone arch tunnel" built in 1865 near Dayton on the way to Salamanca. Another highlight was bringing up the rear was our own NYC Caboose, #19602. Riders paid a premium to ride in it, but all felt it was well worth the price.
